An organic farm in Hong Kong
Food is a rich subject.
The pleasure of tasting new flavours is not the only aspect of food that makes it so exciting. Understanding where food comes from, how it's grown, seasonal produce and sustainability is important because it's probably one of the most encompassing subjects in the 21st century. It entails economics, social structures and politics. Besides the joy of food and its nutritional benefits (if you eat well), it can also be utilised to bridge the gap between cultures and promote awareness. Given my desire to delve into the world of food, I decided to visit an organic farm in Hong Kong (the address is below). I'd highly recommend this experience to everyone. As an avid baker who studied the social sciences, it was time I learned about the context of all those ingredients sitting in my kitchen. In other words, what is their story?
While it can be argued that Hong Kong's organic scene is limited, I got a real glimpse into the process of organic farming and felt very grateful for the ingredients I get to use. The effort that goes into organic farming significantly exceeds the effort used in conventional farming methods. But it's worth it. One can truly see, feel and taste the difference on the farm. We picked unusually large looking lemons, chunky pumpkins, figs and pink dragon fruit (pictures below).
The most delicious thing I had was the dragon fruit. While the skin was warm, its cold and soft core melted in my mouth and its refreshing sweetness lightened any of the heat exhaustion I had previously felt. The fruit's cool internal temperature mystified me considering the fact it was a hot and humid day in July.
Instead of trying to understand the science of it, I just chalked it up to one of the very many things this exquisite universe has to offer. I didn't feel the need to respond to the experience with anything but pure and unadulterated appreciation
